BANGOR CITY 2 (Morley 84, Jones 90+1)
FC HONKA 1 (Koskinen 21)
EUROPA LEAGUE SECOND QUALIFYING ROUND SECOND LEG
(Bangor win 3-2 on aggregate)
TWO goals in the last seven minutes sealed a remarkable comeback victory for Neville Powell’s Bangor City heroes at an emotion-charged Racecourse.
Trailing 1-0 from the 21st minute and heading for the exit, Bangor’s famous never-say-die attitude once more saw them to an unforgettable triumph and a 3-2 aggregate win.
City found themselves under pressure for most of the first half, Honka’s neat passing skills and inter-play creating a number of scoring opportunities.
The visitors had the first attempt at goal on four minutes when a long range free-kick from Nicholas Otaru rolled harmlessly wide.
There was a little more cause for alarm for City a minute later when Jami Puustinen drilled a tantalising ball across the face of goal after beating Peter Hoy to Rasmus Schuller’s hopeful pass.
Otaru showed neat trickery in the Bangor box in the ninth minute before firing in a left foot thunderbolt which was bravely blocked by James Brewerton.
The Finns were looking increasingly dangerous and almost broke the deadlock on 12 minutes when Hermann Vuorinen played a slick one-two with Puustinen before hitting a low shot which keeper Paul Smith pushed on to the outside of the post.
Slick Honka kept pressing and Vuorinen should have done better when Schuller set him up for a clear opportunity but he shot weakly straight at Smith.
The writing was on the wall, though, and in the 21st minute Markus Paatelainen fed the ball wide to left-back Sampo Koskinen who was allowed to cut inside and blast a superb shot inside the far corner of the net from 20 yards.
Koskinen lashed well over after taking advantage of slack City defending but the hosts had a sniff of an opening when Peter Hoy’s cross from the right saw Sion Edwards ready to pull the trigger only for Demba Savage to nick the ball away at the last second.
Bangor made visiting keeper Tuomas Peltonen work for the first time in the 36th minute when Eddie Jebb picked up a wayward pass and hit a left-foot shot which forced a smart save.
Honka could have extended their lead when defender Ville Koskimaa had a free header from a Schuller cross but could only find the grateful arms of Smith.
Edwards tried to pull the Welsh Cup holders level from an ambitious 40-yard free-kick in first half injury time, but his fierce hit flew wide, then Les Davies used typical robustness to burst clear in the box, but he unwisely chose to pass instead of shoot and Saakko Lepola cleared the danger.
Bangor began the second half on the attack but it was Scandinavians who posed the first threat when Schuller’s inswinging corner was netbound but Michael Johnston headed off the line.
Otaru then linked smartly with Savage on the edge of the box but hammered left-footed well over the top.
Bangor caused concern in the Honka rearguard on 59 minutes when Davies flicked on one of Hoy’s trademark long throws into the six-yard box, but no home player was able to get a touch and Otaru cleared.
Edwards’ instinctive volley flew beyond the crossbar, but then the ever dangerous Vuorinen left Brewerton standing down the right, broke into the area and his byeline cross was scrambled behind for a corner.
Schuller’s first flag-kick was headed behind by Brewerton, but his second was back-headed by Savage at the near post and Vuorinen was unable to strike the target.
Another Hoy throw had Honka looking shaky and the ball broke to Jones who miscued from eight yards.
The Welsh Premier side were now beginning to apply some pressure and from an Edwards free-kick on the left Davies connected with a diving header which prompted a fantastic save from Peltonen.
Johnston is one of those defenders who has an uncanny knack of being in the right place at the right time and City were glad he was twice when blocking a Savage shot and then intercepting a Vuorinen pass which would surely have led to a goal.
Soon after Smith did well to keep out a Lepola strike and from the rebound Puustinen headed into the side-netting.
Things looked dodgy for Bangor when Vuorinen was clean through, but first leg hero Smith impressed again, saving with his feet.
City had another half-chance when Peltonen could only punch Hoy’s monster throw-in on to the left foot of Edwards whose volley narrowly missed the target.
Bangor were playing so much better in the second half and a firmer connection by Nicky Ward from a great cross from the byeline by substitute Alan Bull would surely have brought a goal.
Then in the 84th minute the City fans were in raptures when Dave Morley rose highest to head in an Edwards corner to level the tie.
An even more amazing moment arrived in the first minute of added time when Ward’s drive was diverted home by first leg scorer and recent signing Jones six yards out to seal a fantastic win.

concerned for him dave with constant use of bad language and bad attitude. threats about getting people barred etc.. im sure he will learn when he grows up. good luck with the secretary job, not easy at all to do, but im sure you will be a success. everything in place for a good season for hotspur, and hopefully straight back up to the cymru alliance. interesting this week to see south wales reject the pressure to reduce the league numbers, whereby north just folded, and the south won their appeal to stay as last season. that has forced the welsh cup draw to have to be re held for south wales region. maybe massive compensation claims can now be lodged by those clubs relegated out of the cymru alliance due to the league reduction. as the faw found in favor of the clubs on appeal in the south, an injustice has now been done to the clubs forced out who did not finish in relegation positions.
